Blurs
One photographic technique that I am particularly fond of is the
tripod-free slow-shutter pan. It is excellent for capturing moving objects and
retaining a sense of speed (or motion, at least). A shutter speed slower than around 1/30 of a second
can really get things nice and blurry; the trick is to pan the camera so that
the moving object is blurred less than everything else in the image.
You should pan the entire time the shutter is open; that is, you should
start panning before you open the shutter and continue panning as long as it's open.
Give it a try at your
next bicycle race.
To be honest, I just like keeping the shutter open for a while.
I sometimes do use a tripod.
